#2 ~ Web Byte - Engineer UI Design, Ram Reinstall, and More...
by Bobby Smith - Written on December 26, 2025 (originally published on July 20, 2017)
Happy Friday, everyone!
December is almost over as well as a wonderful 2025. Hope everyone had a great week and a very Merry Christmas.
On this week's archive we are covering the first Web Byte I put out. I remember this series when I started it and the excitement I had for sharing interesting web-related content. It's great to look back and see how far things have come.
I do feel like I would like to bring this back in some form, just because it would be a good way to share, and keep track of, things I've found interesting over the years. Maybe in 2026, I can start it up again.
Hope you enjoy and have a wonderful end to your year.

Web Byte - Engineer UI Design, Ram Reinstall, and More...
July 20, 2017 ~ COMBLY7
Is it Wednesday already! This week has been a bit busy with other projects, so I didn't have time to work on anything I wanted to show. So to fill in this slow Wednesday gap I decided to create a weekly segment called “Web Byte.”
“Web Byte” is a compilation of articles and videos that I found interesting during the past week with my thoughts and opinions on the subjects at hand. So lets get this inaugural Web Byte started!
1. “Designed by Engineer” by Ahmed Sulaiman ->
“Designed by Engineer” is a wonderful article showcasing Ahmed's work through 60 days of UI and UX design. It follows Ahmed's journey through 60 days of UI challenges supplied by a Daily UI challenge website he found. He shows off and comments on designs ranging from basic login screens to location trackers. If you are interested in UI or looking at attractive UI I recommend checking out this article.
2. “'Don't run this on any system you expect to be up' they said, but we did it anyway” by Rick from Byte.nl ->
That title is definitely a mouthful isn't it. I wouldn't fault you if you had no clue what this article is about, since that title isn't the most descriptive. A better title, stolen from Reddit, would be “We upgraded 2000+ Ubuntu servers by installing the operating system in memory, wiping the root disk and reinstalling the OS back on disk from RAM.” While this title is also a mouthful it is a bit more descriptive of what this article is about. What they did is in the revised title. They were able to reinstall the server OS by writing it to memory then installing from memory. A very interesting process. Not something you necessarily want to do, but a wonderful experiment nonetheless.
3. "Syntactic Sugar In C - (Ab)using 'For' Loops" by Serge Zaitsev ->
Serge Ziatsev modifies and manipulates one of the core components of C beyond recognition in his article. For loops are no longer safe. If you are wary of the dreaded macro you may want to tread carefully in this madhouse Serge has constructed. I really recommend this article. It is short and to the point, while also displaying and teaching how for loops operate and how they can be manipulated to function in ways most may not think to use them.
4. "Level Design Lessons from Dishonored 2" by Steve Lee ->
Steve Lee gives great insight into the level design and development ideology within Arkane Studios with his talk "Level Design Lessons from Dishonored 2" at GDC 2017. Arkane Studios is one to watch when it comes to what I would call "living world" level design. They construct worlds that have a sense of place and history behind them, while also having an open-ended design that allows for player creativity and freedom within the space. Steve talks about this methodology and how others could achieve this style. I highly recommend this video if you are interested in level design or video games in general.
This has been the first Web Byte and I hope you enjoyed it. If you have any suggestions or comment don't hesitate to leave them below.
Thank you and goodbye until next time.
